Saturday 1 December 2001 - leaving Daytona

7:15 am Charlie and Sandy helped us push away from the dock because they put a boat quite close in front of us. There is a guy who polishes the big power boats, and he's been doing this one.

We went through the Main Street Bridge behind CAROLINA (whom we first met in Belhaven - they were anchored out - and then met again at Barefoot Landing), and then through the Memorial Bridge with them and another boat.

All the bridges in Daytona except these two have been taken out and replaced with fixed bridges.

We went past Seven Seas Marina and I took some photos of it. The current was at least 2 knots here, probably because the river squeezes down narrow - there was almost no current at Caribbean Jack's Marina.

Saw a power boat named JOB SITE, and then several with names like RELATION* SHIP, FRIEND * SHIP, and PARTNER * SHIP. Talked to PARTNERSHIP on the radio - they used to have their boat in Solomons. There are almost as many people who used to have their boats in Solomons as Canadians.

Passed the New Smyrna Beach Municipal Marina, but the marina apparently no longer has a phone. Saw several porpoises leaping and playing in Brickhouse Cove. I reached behind me to get the chart book, and didn't realize that Bob had put the binoculars on top of it. They fell on the floor. Bob says they are broken, but he's put them back together. I don't know if they are as good as they were.

Came through the Haulover Canal, and going down the Indian River saw someone anchored that Bob thought was anchored in the channel. They were pretty close but not actually IN the channel. Got to Titusville Marina by 1445. I actually managed to LASSO the stern piling by MYSELF!!

Titusville was 95 cents a foot with a Boat US discount, electricity $3 for 30 amp, and they gave us a splitter which they locked to the dock, plus 6% tax. We always enjoy it there. They have an email line for cruisers outside the office under an awning so it is always available. They have floating docks, but I don't know why - there's no tide to speak of. They have several washers and three dryers, of which dryers only 2 work well. You can sign up by 8:15 in the a.m. and they will pick you up at 8:30 to go to ACE hardware. Bob did this and he was able to get some things he needed.

Every time we come to Titusville we would walk across the highway and across the parking lot of the shopping center to Azteca Mexican Restaurant for dinner. The food is plentiful, and good. It seems to be a family run place. In the daytime the nearby courthouse workers probably come to eat here. It was decorated for Christmas. There was a Xmas tree as well as exterior lights. Bob always gets the taco platter and I had a taco salad.

We hung out at the marina watching the manatee (taking pictures of them is difficult, but I tried). Bob said he saw one with a calf, but I didn't see that.

Monday 3 December 2001

We intended to stay here 2 days, but we decided to extend the stay because the space shuttle was supposed to take off on Tuesday, and Titusville is one of the best places to see it. CAROLINA was here for a couple of days, but left today.

We visited Patrick on VAYA CON DIOS (which is a beautiful CSY and is for sale), and took photos. Also took pictures of an osprey on the top of a mast and a green heron that was sitting on a dock line

The Natural Resources folk shot an alligator that he become 'aggressive' i.e. people were feeding him and he started going after dogs.

and then he was too heavy to get out of the water, so they towed his carcass by boat to the other side of the marina and pulled him up on the beach.

They said he probably came over from the wildlife reserve over on Cape Canaveral. We have never tried to visit the Cape. The Wildlife reserve might be interesting, but I'm just not that interested in the space stuff.

Bob got on his bike and rode around the area quite a bit. He bought two lighted angels (he has not been able to find reindeer although he did find a sleigh) to put up over the staysail boom.

He also replaced the crazed glass/plastic cover over the instruments in the cockpit, and put up the CO detector in the aft cabin.

Bob and I and Joan and Gordon from the Brewer in the slip opposite us walked over to the park to see the shuttle launch (they are here for the winter and know where everything is - they said that was the best place to watch), but the launch was delayed again. We all walked to KFC and had dinner.

Pushed off with Gordon's help and went through the Titusville Bridge(which doesn't open during space shots - ditto the Haulover Bridge and the NASA bridge) with 3 power boats and 7 sailboats on their 1st or 2nd opening of the morning (they don't open until 7:15 am). Then went through the NASA bridge

although that bridge divided us up into two groups of 5 - we were the first boat in the 2nd group. He got 5 close to the bridge and then let them through, and then closed again and waited until the 2nd groups was all at the bridge, cleared traffic and opened for us.

Coming down the Indian River, Bob did quite a bit of sailing as there was a strong east wind. He likes to sail.

Took a photo of the Cocoa Beach water tower with the big flag on it. Some of the fixed bridges are in such bad shape at the bottom that you can see the rebar and wire mesh sticking out. One of them has apparently had the concrete painted at the bottom - whether to conceal new cement work or to cover up graffiti is hard to tell. I made lunch and when I came up to eat it, I spilled a whole glass of iced tea on myself.

We anchored about mile marker 920 behind Crab Point off Melbourne Beach about 1320. The wind was 10-20 knots from the east - we were as close to shore as we could get.

The wind gen was running and putting lots of amps into the batteries, so we ran the TV. The space shuttle was to go off at 5:19, so I turned up the TV loud while we ate dinner in the cockpit. We saw it come out over the trees, and then in between clouds. I got a pretty good picture with the digital camera.

It was not as close as it would have been if we were still in Titusville, but I was glad to see it in person.

Thursday 6 December 2001 - Melbourne to Ft. Pierce

Bob pulled the anchor and I motored out of the anchorage. He started the refrigeration, and pulled out the jib and then cooked bacon for himself (I just had a bagel).

We passed a junk rig which was apparently being pushed along by a dinghy.

Every time a power boat passed the depth sounder went crazy because they stirred up mud. We got through the shallow areas by Vero Beach - I didn't get a picture of the mooring field there. Bob had the sails out quite a bit.

We got to Ft. Pierce, and the bridge said she might have to give us 'a delay' because they were doing maintenance on the bridge. The car traffic was only one way because the maintenance trucks were parked on the bridge. Bob was turning around when the bridge horn sounded,

but we did get back in line and go through. We were tied up at Harbortown Marina by about 2:00.

We had dinner at the restaurant - we are currently trying to decide whether to go outside (the wind will be on the nose) or go inside again.

Late in the day, Sunshine II came back from the yard. They have the same kind of bimini. I took some pictures of both boats.

Saturday 8 December 2001- Christmas Light Parade

Our original plan was to leave today and go outside to Lake Worth, stay there a day or so and then go outside to Miami. But the winds are supposed to be gusty and from the SE and would be on the nose. There is supposed to be a cold front come through this afternoon though, and the winds are supposed to switch to the SW tonight and tomorrow. So we stayed an extra day. Bob did a load of wash, and I walked over to where AURORA is on F dock. I talked to a broker (not the one who listed the boat), and he let me into the security gate, and I went down and took some pictures of her and also of JOURNEY who was on the same dock

We had dinner on the boat, and then Sunny said the boat parade was that night, and the marina had chairs set up, so we went up to watch. We sat next to Ralph and Cindy of SUNSHINE II, and discussed a lot of stuff, and I finally persuaded Ralph to come over and see how we'd done the stuff on our boat. He was impressed with the pin rails,

A pinrail is strong rail at the side of the deck of a vessel, for holding the "pins" to which some of the running rigging is belayed (Belaying is to fasten (a rope) by winding around a pin or short rod inserted in a holder so that both ends of the rod are clear.) A pinrail is very useful for storing dock lines and similar items when they are not being used.

Ralph wanted the 'plans' for the pinrails. Bob laughed and said there were no plans. He drilled some holes in a piece of oak, and used coffee table legs for the 'pins'.

Sunday 9 December 2001- Leaving Ft. Pierce

We decided just to go all the way down to Miami from here. Last year we went overnight from Miami to Lake Worth (started at about 17:30 and ended up about 12 hours later up at Lake Worth even though we sailed a good bit.), and then went during the day from Lake Worth to Ft. Pierce, so I figured we could do both in less than 24 hours.

Bob was up at 7 and returned the splitter and keys to the marina. We cast off in a relatively uneventful way and were leaving the marina by 7:30. The tide was going out the inlet, which pushed us pretty fast until we got to the end of the jetties and then it was bumpy as it had been last year on the way in. Light winds, - Bob put the main and staysail up and also the steaming cone (meaning we were motor sailing).

I went below and took some naps. Could hear the bridge tenders calling on the ICW. We are avoiding 30 some non-fixed bridges by going this way. Plus the ones that are between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami which we never do anyway because of the Julia Tuttle bridge which is only 56 feet high instead of 65 feet like it should be. We passed St. Lucie inlet about 11:45. Bob put up the jib, and then gave up on it. We saw a tug pulling something long and skinny - either a dock or some kind of pipeline.

Bob started looking at the water temperature to be sure we didn't get out into the Gulf Stream, which is warmer because it is going north (opposite direction to us) at 3 or 4 knots. It was up to 82 deg F, but then went back down again. After lunch, Bob decided he could take a nap, and he went and lay down for an hour. By 14:15 we were coming even with Jupiter Inlet.

At 16:00 we were off Lake Worth and the sun was going down.

Bob said to keep the boat about a mile off shore, and keep the wind at 30 to 45 deg. He had the radar set at 3 miles. (Normally in the ICW he sets it at 1/8th mile.) I would go with the wind on the port until we were in water of 30 to 40 feet, and then tack out until we were more than 1 mile from shore, and then repeat.

We heated up some stew, and then I went below to take another nap. Apparently I only slept for about a hour and then something waked me. I came up into the cockpit and we sat there together until about 10 when I saw Bob yawn. I asked him if he couldn't sleep and he said no, but a bit later, he agreed that he was tired.

He first went into the aft cabin, but couldn't sleep there, so went up and slept in the bunk in the main saloon. We were still motor sailing with main and staysail.

All was well for awhile. Nothing frightening on the radar. Then I started hearing announcements. The US Navy was conducting hazardous surface and underwater exercises from Port Everglades (Ft. Lauderdale) to some place I didn't know. The CG had a zone around all passenger ships in Port Everglades and Government Cut (Miami), and pleasure craft were restricted. I didn't hear either announcement well, and we were approaching Ft. Lauderdale.

I saw a big ship and I saw their red, white and green lights. (When you see both red port and green starboard lights that means the ship is either heading for you-(green -white-red) or away from you (red-white-green).) I moved out from shore a bit, but didn't want to go too far out because of the Navy stuff. Then I saw just the white and green, so I figured they turned right and were going in the inlet. Then they shut off the green light and appeared to stop. A little bit later they turned on the deck lights. I guess they anchored or picked up a mooring.

At the same time, there was a tug and tow was coming north, but he was on the other side of the ship, so I figured I didn't have to worry.

The Navy made another announcement and said to contact them on channel 88, so I tried that and didn't get an answer, and then I tried 16, and didn't get an answer there either. I was now south of Ft. Lauderdale. The Navy gave the announcement again. I switched to the new radio and this time when I went to call, I overshot channel 88 and discovered that there was an 88A. Called on that channel, and the Navy answered and told me that if we were in less than 100 feet of water, there was no problem.

Monday 10 December 2001- Arriving in Miami

Eventually the wind came around more east, and we were sailing pretty well. Bob woke up about 2:30, and I briefed him, and then went down and fell asleep in the aft cabin. About 4:30 am, he came down and poked me. I came up and fixed the computer screen (the Toshiba is going bananas), and called the CG on the radio to ask about coming in to Government Cut (Miami). I heard that we should call on channel 15, but it was channel 16, and I think I waked the guy up.

Finally another guy came on and said that if we went south of Dodge Island in Fisherman's Channel, we would be OK as far as the restricted zone was concerned.

Bob was very nervous and I finally said that usually I was at the wheel here and he was taking down the sails. He thought that was a wonderful idea, so he turned the helm over to me, and took the sails down. We went down the channel and under the Rickenbacker causeway, and anchored on the other side about 5:30 after 119 nm traveled at an average of 5.5 knots. It took 22 hours.

After we turned stuff off, I went below and fell asleep with my clothes on.

Bob got up about sunrise and took down the steaming cone, but did not turn off the anchor light.

We got up about 7:30, and about 8 or 9 I started calling marinas. No room at Dinner Key and they wouldn't know anything else until 1 pm. No room at Crandon Park. So I called Miamarina, and they said yes they had space. But they didn't sell fuel.

So we picked up the anchor and went to Crandon Park, and got fuel, Crandon diesel is 99 cents/gal.

There is a way to get from the RIckenbacker Causeway to Crandon Park without going all the way down to Bear Cut, and it only makes our depth alarm go off once. But there was a guy anchored in this channel. After we passed him going in and were going to pass him coming out, he moved

there is a big mall area with lots of shops and restaurants to the west, and to the south are the big bank buildings and the Hard Rock. Miamarina is the same price as Dinner Key. ($1.25/ft). Cheaper than Miami Beach, and much nicer. No internet connection there but the price includes electricity, water and cable TV. Bob doesn't think much of the showers though, so we are showering at our daughter's.

We tied up in slip C9. It took Bob some time to put the boat in the slip so that I could get off. I went up and paid for 11 days - we will leave here on the 21st. Then we went back and had another nap.

When we finally roused ourselves, we went to dinner at the Hard Rock (I had a coupon from the AAA book).

We were not in the mood for anything that required any effort to get to or to decide what to eat.I had previously been to one Hard Rock in Atlanta, but Bob had not been. He's not much of a rock music person. Dinner for the two of us on December 12, 2001 with the coupon was $35.95.

After which I called our son in Charleston (we are filing float plans with him so someone always knows where we are) and our daughter who lives in Miami.

Bob attached the TV cable, and we went to bed. Couldn't even stay awake to see the end of the football game.

Tuesday 11 December 2001- Settling In

Got up and ran the refrigeration and Bob went up to get local rental car numbers from the marina phone book. I called around for rates. Rented a car from Budget, which was on Bricknell Dr, just across the Miami RIver from us.

Bob walked up and picked up the car, and we went out to the BoatUS in north Miami to turn in the squashed fender (which got squashed at Isle of Palms, SC and won't hold air anymore). Got a new fender. Then went to AAA to pick up new maps and tour book for FL.

There is a definite lack of fast food restaurants on US Route 1 between downtown Miami and our daughter's place in SW 175th Street area. About the only place is Burger King, so we had lunch there

on the way to our daughters. This place had a playground for kids. The lunch for the two of us was under $9.00. She was working in the morning (she is an airline pilot).

We had dinner at our daughter's and then went back to the boat, ran the refrigeration and went to bed.

(Note - the refrigeration is not automatic. It can be run either with the engine or with shore power, but it has to be turned on and off manually and you can't just leave it on to run or it will freeze up.)

Although Bob hasn't been able to get the reindeer for the staysail area, we do have the boat decorated for Xmas. We have

Wednesday 12 December 2001

Got up and ran the refrigeration, and then Bob dropped me at our daughters house (she is working all day today.), and went down to the base at Homestead to the commissary. He also went to an RV store to pick up 12V light bulbs. They sell the same bulbs for 95 cents that West Marine wants $2.95 for. (Whenever something is designated as "marine" it is automatically more expensive.) I spent the day trying to fix the Toshiba (unsuccessful, but I did get the virus software updated), and uploading digital photos to Photoworks (successful, but takes a long time). Also took some photos of the grandkids.

Bob took our grandson to basketball practice and we ate dinner at our daughter's and drove back to the marina - discovered that there is construction at night on the route that was OK during the day.

Thursday 13 December 2001

Our daughter is off today, so we ran the refrigeration and then went to her house and I worked on the computer some more. We were held up on the way over by the Miami River drawbridge going up. Bob pointed out the car parked on the bridge (not the opening part obviously) which belonged to the bridge tender. He has his own parking space right there on the bridge.

Our daughter was shopping in the morning and she ended up behind us on the expressway. We ordered dinner from Ron's the local Cuban place.

Friday 14 December 2001 - Road Trip

We took the car and ran up to Ft. Lauderdale to go to Sailorman (a consignment marine store), but didn't have any luck there. Went to a couple of other local retail marine stores and bought some minor stuff.

Talked to one other CSY owner, and tried to contact another one, but he was (we found out later) out on his boat changing the oil. We ate lunch at Lester's (a diner) and came back to the marina. We went up to the mall and walked around

Saturday 15 December 2001

Bob ran the engine (to get it warm) and changed the oil. The marina has free disposal for oil. We went and saw our grandson's basketball game with our daughter and granddaughter, had dinner, and got back in time to see the tail end of the Miami boat parade. I thought the big Ft. Lauderdale one would be on TV, but it wasn't.

Sunday 16 December 2001 Early Christmas


We went to our daughter's and then went next door for brunch and the gift exchange for the kids. Our granddaughter (just 2) was wearing her choice of a dress (not the one our daughter wanted her to wear) and cowboy boots, but I didn't manage to get a picture of her in the boots which came off immediately she got there.

While the adults were making and eating brunch, the kids all went out (two age 5, grandson age 7, granddaughter age 2, and one age 3.5) and started playing in the sand that was in the yard

They all had to be de-sanded, and dried off and redressed - this time in our daughter's choice of dress.

I gave our daughter and son-in-law their presents, and they gave us theirs. We left in the afternoon and went back to the boat. Picked up a turkey at Publix on the way home.

Monday 17 December 2001 - Time to leave?

I woke up this morning with the sudden realization that I had meant to allow 3 days to get to Key West from here and had made the mistake of saying we'd be here until the 21st when we were due in Key West on the 22nd. I had meant that we'd be here until the 19th and leave on the 20th instead of here until the 20th and leave on the 21st.

Also Bob is getting antzy. I listen to the weather, and hear that people are taking a weather window to the Bahamas. So we decide to leave a day earlier than we originally thought we would.

Tuesday 18 December 2001- Last Day

We went to our daughter's in the afternoon and did the last bit of computer stuff, and then went with them to the Enchanted Forest for the evening with several of their friends. The rides were included in the admission, and I went on the bumper cars with our grandson, and on the ferris wheel. Our granddaughter was fearless about riding almost any ride.

Wednesday 19 December 2001 - On our way south (or southwest)

Bob turned in the rental car and walked back to the marina. He said he wanted to leave by 10. I went up to get a refund, and use the bathrooms and download the last bit of pocketmail from the pay phone. We got underway at 10:00. Bob had really wanted to leave before that, and go out Government Cut, which we could have done because there were no cruise ships in, but I thought it would be better to go the other way. So we went down and out around Cape Florida - past No Name Harbor.

I took some pictures of the Cape Florida lighthouse. We rarely use Biscayne Channel as we consider the Cape Florida channel to be shorter. The Biscayne channel is better marked.

Stiltsville is still here. Stiltsville is a controversial community on the flats south of Miami between Florida Bay and Hawk Channel. The water is from 1 to 3 ft deep at low tide. The general mud flat area is divided by several main navigational channels. One of these channels is Biscayne Channel, the most frequently used channel south of Government Cut and the only access channel before Government Cut was made. Most of the houses are along the Biscayne Channel.

The "official" history of Stiltsville begins with a local fisherman named "Crawfish" Eddie Walker in the early 1930's, however some historians say there were about 12 shacks out in "the flats" as the area was known, as early as 1922. As Key Biscayne grew, the residents complained the houses and shacks on the flats would lower their beachfront property value, and referred to them as squatters, even though the houses had submerged campsite leases with the state.

Judge Frank Knuck of the Dade County Circuit Court, built his first house in 1953, stated "We're a family-type colony, not a scruffy bunch scruffy bunch of squatters." Opposition continued as Florida Secretary of State, Bruce Smathers, characterized the community as a " blight on Biscayne Bay," and called for it's end to existence by 1986. However others disagreed and took great pride in Miami's unique village on the sea.

Bay bottom leases were issued by the State of Florida in 1976. The leases were transferred in the late '80's to the National Park after the boundary was extended northward in 1980, just enough to include Stiltsville. By then there were fourteen houses and a radio tower. In August 24, 1992, hurricane Andrew the strongest hurricane since 1926, left only seven of the fourteen houses standing. The destruction was devastating, but half of the stilt houses survived. A testimony to the quality building design of many of the structures and a triumph over natures fury.

On August 28, 1998, the Florida National Register Review Board voted unanimously to recommend the Stiltsville site to the National Register of Historic Places. Seven months later, on March 18, 1999, the National Register of Historic Places denied the application based on the fact that the remaining seven houses were under 50 years old.

As a result of the denied application, the National Park Service, owner of the land since 1980, will not renew the bay bottom leases that the houses stand on after July 1,1999. They have issued a mandatory removal of all structures

After we got out into Hawk Channel (from Miami) Bob struggled to pull out the main (it resisted), and then put up the staysail. The wind was almost non-existent until after 12:30 when it moved from almost on the nose to somewhere useful. Up to that time we were motoring at about 5.6 knots. Tried to turn on the engine driven refrigeration, but the belts were too loose or the clutch was slipping.

Turned off the engine. At 3:55, after the engine cooled off, Bob tightened the belts, and ran the refrigeration.

Last year, we left from RIckenbacker and made it as far as Point Willie off Key Largo and anchored. We aren't going to get that far this year so we anchored off Point Elizabeth after 37.9 nm at about 5 pm. We were within about 1/4 mile from shore, and the bottom was muddy sand, and the holding was good. We were protected from the prevailing wind, and there is NO traffic in this area at all. (There is no traffic because there is nothing there). Of course, it would not be protected if the wind was from the Hawk Channel side (whatever direction that is). It is very peaceful here - no other boats, and the boat was steady all night.

Bob started to pull the anchor about 7. We put up the sails and motor sailed, and then even sailed for a bit. By 12:20, we were motor sailing off Upper Matecombe Key. There were huge mats of floating grass off Grassy Key. Bob was afraid that the grass would clog up the engine intake but when he checked it didn't seem to have done so.

We had intended to anchor at Long Key, but Bob thought we'd make it to Duck Key. We were both wrong. We made it almost all the way to Marathon and anchored SW of the island in Vaca Bight within about 1/3rd of a mile of shore about 4:45 after 55.1 nm at an average speed of 6.2 knots. Sand bottom, and really good holding. The wind was from the north at 20-23 knots with gusts all night, and we had waves with whitecaps going past the boat, but because the shore was just a short distance away, there was no fetch, and the boat rocked a bit, but didn't roll and didn't move appreciably. The wind generator was putting in 5 to 10 amps all night.

When we were at the end of the chain that Bob let out, there was a crab pot right under the nose of the boat, so he pulled up a bit, but by morning, the line was wrapped around the anchor chain. This didn't prove as difficult to remove as Bob had feared.

It was very bumpy motoring past 7 Mile Bridge, as the wind was from that direction, but once we got to Bahia Honda Key, it was good sailing - just the jib out and were doing 6.5 or 7 knots. We made such good time, that I called the NAS marina at Boca Chica to see if they could take us a day early and they said they could and they would put us on the 'wall' instead of in a slip. (That didn't sound too good to me.) I asked them about the power line on the chart and they said it didn't exist anymore, which is good.

We came into the Boca Chica channel about 14:00. Bob wanted to tie port side to, so he tried to turn. We got the bow to the wall, but couldn't get the stern to come around, because, as we discovered, there was both a lot of wind AND a lot of current. He tried to get back to the wall and was being carried sideways through the marina. We finally just tied up starboard side to, after 41.1 nm at an average of 6.4 knots (motor-sailing with just the jib).

It's good that we came in early, as we'd have had to put ourselves in a slip if we had come in Sat as we planned.
Bob went in to sign up (they needed to see his military ID) and I went in to find him doing all kinds of paperwork. It's good that he has to do that once in awhile because normally I do that, and he should be cross trained (joke). We are right next to the bathrooms and the internet connection. Probably better than a slip although the cement wall is hard on the dock-lines.

Boca Chica is 65 cents a foot or $6.50/ft/month plus metered electric. They have 4 toilets and 3 showers per sex (at least I assume the men have the same as us) 4 washers, 4 dryers, and an internet connection. There is a little bar (Navi-Gator) with sandwiches,

Bob lost his glasses case, and I can't find my purple chamois/towel. My towel must have blown overboard. He had his glasses case when he went to sign in, so we thought it must be somewhere in the marina office. They closed at 1600, and are not open again until Dec 26th, so we can't look again until then. [I found it later in the boat book (where we keep the documentation papers - documentation is like an international boat license)]

Saturday 22 December 2001 Settling in

I had made a reservation for a rental car at the place with the cheapest rates. It was the cheapest because they didn't have airport pickup -the pick-up point was down at the southernmost point. I called to see if we could get the rental car early and we could. So Bob got his folding bike from the stern, and got it out of the protective bag (black) to cycle down.

Fortunately, he had a bike helmet or he couldn't have ridden it. Some other folks came into the dock intending to ride bikes on the base

but they didn't have helmets and the base would not let them cycle without helmets, so they left.

He rode down to the east end of Duval street and picked the car up. He said it took him 20 minutes to get off the base, as the gate is at the other end. The trickiest part was crossing Roosevelt Blvd where Rt 1 comes in from Stock Island. A lot of the way there was a bike path. A lot of the way there was a bike path. They gave him a red Escort station wagon. He put the bike in the back and drove back to the base. It didn't take him but about a hour

He went to the PO but there were no packages or letters yet. Then he came back to the marina (he could not get a pass for the whole time at the gate because the pass office is closed for the holiday). Then we left and went to Sigsbee to the Commissary - thinking that it wouldn't be open Sunday (true) or Monday. However, because of Xmas, it is open Mon and not Tuesday. The little food trailer outside was closed, so we shopped while hungry (got cranberry sauce for the turkey), and then went to Taco Bell to eat.

When we came back to the base the sentry pointed out that our pass was good only until Jan 02, 2001 and not 2002. He took the pass and gave us another one which was only good until Dec 26th. He wanted to know the year of the car, and it wasn't on the service contract, but the stuff in the glove compartment said 1995. The sentry thought that it was funny that we didn't know the year of the car we were driving.

I understand they've started sending out the Customs stickers for the next year before the 1st of the year. [A Customs sticker is a sticker that is placed on all private aircraft and private vessels (30 feet or more in length) as proof that the User Fee for entry into the U.S. has been paid for the calendar year. Any arriving vessel or aircraft that does not have an annual decal is required to pay a non-refundable per arrival User Fee of $27.50, and complete an application, which will be forwarded to the processing center.] I called to see if I could pick one up and Key West Customs said they don't have 2002 yet.

I called the Pittsburgh office and they said that I was misinformed when I was told that I had to wait until Jan 1st to get the new stickers, and that if I could fax the info to him (with a credit card #) that for an extra $6, he could send it back to me via UPS. We could have it before we leave that way. However, UPS wants an address. I asked if I could use the local customs office as an address, and they said yes. So that's what we are doing.

Note - you can't get in the base gate without an ID, There is no mail delivery here. We have to get our mail downtown at General Delivery. But when I went to order something which would have to come UPS, the guy at the marina here said I should give them the UPS address, and mark it hold for pickup. The office is on Rockland Key and the address is 127 US Highway !, Key West FL 33040 He said sometimes the UPS guy can get to the marina, and sometimes they turn him back at the gate.

While I was doing email last night, Bob heard about a guy that went aground and called the CG. The CG said they don't do that anymore.

Later we heard a guy who said his boat was sinking - he was a commercial lobster pot fisherman, and ran himself aground on the coral. He will have some fines.

I didn't write anything more in the log from December 22nd until January 6th.

Tuesday 25 December 2001 - Christmas

The marina had a pot luck in the bar - we brought the turkey that we got in Miami. Since we have an oven we could do a small turkey. Everyone contributed and it was a lot of fun.

A trawler here at Boca Chica ran aground leaving the marina and got both props banged up - he ran aground going forward and then again going backward. (Trawlers don't have their props protected by the keel the way sailboats do and if the prop gets dinged it can't spin evenly). He said his prop man said that he gets a lot of his work from people going into Sunset Marina in Key West.

While I was down there a gannet dove past me to get a fish, but I didn't get a photo of him.

We stayed in Boca Chica until we picked up our customs sticker from the courthouse downtown and then we returned the rental car.

We left here on 6 January for Newfound Harbor - staging for our trip to the Bahamas
